How to connect BUTT to NOX Radio.

BUTT (Broadcast Using This Tool) is a free, cross-platform encoder used by community and internet radio presenters worldwide. Here's how to connect it to your NOX Radio station for live broadcasts.

Step-by-step

Setup walkthrough

  1. 01

    Install BUTT

    Download BUTT from the official site and install it for your platform. On macOS you may need to allow it under System Settings → Privacy & Security on first launch.

    Open Settings → Server

    In the BUTT window, click Settings, then go to the Server tab. Click ADD to create a new server entry. Give it a name like "NOX Radio".

    Choose Type: Icecast

    Set Type to Icecast (NOX Radio accepts both Shoutcast and Icecast — Icecast is the modern default and works cleanly with BUTT).

    Paste your NOX Radio credentials

    Copy your server details from the NOX Radio dashboard: — Address: your station's streaming host (e.g. stream.noxradio.com.au) — Port: as shown in the dashboard — Password: your source password — Mount: /live (or as shown in the dashboard) — User: source (unless your dashboard specifies otherwise) Click ADD to save the server entry.

    Set audio format

    Switch to the Audio tab. Set codec to MP3 or AAC (matching your station configuration in NOX Radio), and bitrate to 128 kbps for music or 64 kbps for talk. Sample rate 44100 Hz.

    Select audio input

    Under the Main tab, choose your microphone or mixer as the audio device. If you're playing music from another app on the same machine, route audio through a virtual cable (e.g. BlackHole on macOS, VB-Cable on Windows).

    Click Play to go live

    Press the Play button (▶) in the BUTT main window. The status bar shows "Connected". Your listeners are now hearing you live. Press Stop (■) to end the broadcast.

Tips
  • — Test your connection at least 10 minutes before your show — first-time encoder setup catches everyone out once.
  • — Use BUTT's built-in local recording in parallel for an off-platform archive of each show.
  • — If AutoDJ is running, NOX Radio hands the stream over to your live broadcast automatically — and resumes after you disconnect.
  • — Set BUTT to auto-reconnect under Settings → Main so a brief network drop doesn't take you off air.
